Kuala Lumpur has retained its place among the world’s top destinations for higher education, ranking 15th globally in the QS Best Student Cities Rankings 2027. The Malaysian capital also climbed to eighth place for the strength of its universities, reinforcing its position as one of Asia’s leading study destinations.
For students and families considering higher education in Asia, the latest rankings highlight Kuala Lumpur’s continued appeal for academic quality, graduate employability and international opportunities.
Strong Universities Continue to Drive Kuala Lumpur’s Success
The QS Best Student Cities Rankings 2027 place Kuala Lumpur 15th overall among the world’s leading student cities.
One of the city’s strongest performances came in the University Rankings indicator, where it climbed two places to eighth globally. The improvement reflects the presence of 12 universities featured in the QS World University Rankings 2027, with the city’s score increasing to 76.0.
Additionally, Kuala Lumpur moved up two places to 13th in Employer Activity, demonstrating strong demand for graduates among employers. Although the city dropped three places overall from last year’s rankings, it remains eight places higher than in 2025 and continues to rank as Southeast Asia’s second-best student city after Singapore.
Affordability Remains a Challenge
While Kuala Lumpur continues to perform well in several areas, affordability recorded the largest decline. The city fell nine places to 42nd after its affordability score dropped by 9.1 points to 63.9.
QS calculates affordability using university tuition fees alongside Numbeo’s Cost of Living Index and The Economist’s Big Mac Index, which measures purchasing power.
This trend was not unique to Kuala Lumpur. Affordability scores declined in 94 of the 141 cities included in this year’s rankings, reflecting rising living costs across many international study destinations.
Student Experience Shows Mixed Results
The rankings also measure how students perceive their study destination. In the Student Voice category, which considers student opinions on inclusivity, culture, transport and overall quality of life, Kuala Lumpur ranked equal 73rd globally, slipping four places compared with last year.
Meanwhile, the city improved its performance in the Desirability category, climbing eight places to 83rd. This measure combines survey responses from prospective students with wider indicators, including safety, pollution, tourism appeal and corruption indices.
Graduate Opportunities Must Match Recruitment Goals
QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter said the latest data highlights important areas for Malaysia to address as it seeks to attract more international students. He said,
“Affordability fell 9.1 points in a single year, and affordability is not a detail for Malaysia; it is the offer. Student Voice fell too. The country is targeting 250,000 international students by 2030 from around 137,000 today, while raising the salary thresholds that determine whether those graduates can stay. Recruitment ambition and graduate opportunity need to move together.”
His comments underline the importance of balancing international student recruitment with employment opportunities after graduation.

What the Rankings Mean for Students
The QS Best Student Cities Rankings assess cities across six categories, including university quality, employer demand, affordability, student diversity, desirability and student experience.
To qualify, a city must have a population of more than 250,000 and at least two universities featured in the QS World University Rankings 2027.
This year’s rankings include 150 cities, with 61 in Europe, 52 across Asia Pacific, 18 in North America, 12 in the Middle East and Africa, and seven in Latin America.
