Coventry University Kazakhstan has opened its second campus in Almaty, giving students another opportunity to pursue British higher education without leaving the country. The new campus officially opened on 22 September 2026, following the establishment of the university’s first Kazakhstan campus in Astana in 2024.

The expansion makes Coventry University Group the first British university to operate two campuses in Kazakhstan. It also widens access to courses in engineering, computing, business and creative subjects, with further undergraduate and postgraduate programmes planned.

For students and families, the development offers more local options for gaining a British degree. It also reflects Kazakhstan’s wider efforts to strengthen higher education and prepare graduates for changing workforce needs.

Coventry University Kazakhstan Expands Into Almaty

The new campus was developed in partnership with Primus Capital LLP and follows the growth of Coventry University Kazakhstan’s first site in Astana.

More than 850 students have placed their trust in the university’s academic expertise across Astana and Almaty, according to Coventry University Group. Meanwhile, the university plans to continue investing in its facilities to support a growing student community.

Professor John Latham CBE, Coventry University Vice-Chancellor and Group CEO said,

“The new campus in Almaty is another step in our journey to be a global education group. Students at this new campus will be studying in state of the art facilities alongside 30,000 others studying Coventry University degrees overseas. Coventry University Group is dedicated to creating better futures through accessible international education. Our students in Kazakhstan will be able to study in a modern and inspiring environment, taught by world-class academics alongside our course teams in the UK.”

Courses In Engineering, Computing And Creative Subjects

The Almaty campus will introduce foundation courses in Business, Computing, International Relations, Engineering, and Arts and Design.

Additionally, the university plans to expand its undergraduate offering with subjects including Electronic Engineering, Architectural Technology, and Games Design and Development. Planned postgraduate options include Air Transport Management and Control, Robotics and Intelligent Automation.

The mix of subjects could appeal to students interested in technical, creative and business-related careers. However, applicants should check the university’s latest course listings and entry requirements, as programme availability and start dates may vary.

The expansion also brings opportunities to develop skills relevant to Kazakhstan’s technology, engineering and innovation sectors.

Astana Campus Set For Major Redevelopment

Coventry University Kazakhstan opened its first campus in Astana in September 2024, becoming the first British university campus in the country’s capital.

The university is now developing a new flagship campus in Astana, with the complex scheduled to open in 2027. A time capsule was placed in the foundations during a ceremony on 21 September 2026, marking the start of construction.

The investment is intended to provide modern facilities for the university’s growing student community. In addition, the two-campus model will allow Coventry University Kazakhstan to expand its reach across the country.

Dr Miras Daulenov, President of Coventry University Kazakhstan said,

“We laid a time capsule to mark the beginning of construction of our new greenfield campus in Astana as an important step in our long-term strategy to provide modern, high-quality infrastructure for our growing student community as part of Primus Capital’s strategy. At the same time, opening our new campus in Almaty will expand our traditional academic offer into Engineering, Art and Design and emerging technologies, drawing on Coventry University’s expertise in these fields. In this regard, we are grateful to our partners, including Rise Group, Astana Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, DOSCAR Group and Air Astana, for supporting us in creating new opportunities for our talented students.”

Kazakhstan Sees New Opportunities For Students And Researchers

The campus openings have received support from representatives of the governments of Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom, alongside city leaders and university officials.

Those attending the ceremonies included Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, Gulzat Kobenova; Minister of Science and Higher Education, Sayasat Nurbek; the UK’s Trade Envoy to Azerbaijan and Central Asia, Lord John Alderdice; and His Majesty’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Sally Axworthy MBE.

Sayasat Nurbek, Kazakhstan Minister of Science and Higher Education said,

“The development of a new campus by an international university reflects young people’s growing demand for high-quality education and strengthens Kazakhstan’s academic capacity. Projects of this kind create new opportunities for students, educators and researchers while contributing to the country’s human capital.”

For prospective students, the key consideration will be how the new campuses translate into accessible programmes, strong teaching and qualifications that support future career plans. The university’s growing presence could also strengthen links between higher education and employers in Kazakhstan.

As Coventry University Kazakhstan expands in Astana and Almaty, its next challenge will be to maintain academic quality while broadening the range of opportunities available to students across the country.
